Elsewhere & Otherwise 1. Rule-package Serialism

چکیده
A basic sense of the issues can be garnered from a look at Halle's one stated rule: “Shorten the head vowel of a branching foot.” This brief imperative fairly bristles with unasked questions. Why shorten rather than lengthen? indeed, why do anything at all? Why head rather than nonhead ? indeed, why not affect both? Why branching rather than nonbranching? indeed, why not operate on any foot? Over the last decade or so, metrical theory has developed answers to exactly this kind of question, and recent formal work is much concerned with mechanisms for integrating such answers into grammars. Assume a strict bimoraic perspective on trochaic rhythm, which disallows Heavy-Light 1

Length and voicing in Friulian and Milanese Or why rule-free derivations are needed
This paper claims that phonology should express the relationship between vowel length and obstruent voicing operationally rather than in parallel. The empirical focus in on Friulian and Milanese. The distribution of vowel length in Friulian is predictable from the underlying laryngeal specification of obstruents. Stressed vowels are long before underlyingly voiced word-final obstruents although...

متن کاملHarmonic Serialism and Finite-State Optimality Theory
This paper presents a new finite-state model of Optimality Theory (OT). In this model, two assumptions are imposed on the OT framework. Firstly, I adopt the Harmonic Serialism version of OT, in which output forms are derived from input forms via a series of incremental changes. Secondly, constraints are assumed to be strictly local in the sense that each markedness constraint specifies a set of...
